Getting to watch families grow is one of the best parts of being a Charlotte family photographer. I first photographed Riley’s big brothers during their newborn and milestone sessions, so it was incredibly special to welcome baby Riley back for his almost four-month milestone photos.


This family has always chosen to schedule their milestone sessions at 4, 8, and 12 months instead of the traditional 3, 6, and 9 month schedule, and I absolutely love how well this timing works for babies developmentally. By four months old, babies have had an extra month to build strength during tummy time, which often means better head control and more comfort being on their tummy for photos. It also tends to be a stage where babies are more expressive and easily excited, which leads to those big, genuine smiles parents love to see in their galleries.


We started Riley’s milestone session outdoors in one of my favorite spots before heading into the studio. When the seasons allow, this is one of my favorite ways to structure a session because it gives families a beautiful mix of outdoor family photos and bright, clean studio portraits all within the same hour. This week the trees were especially beautiful, showing off fresh spring blooms that made the perfect backdrop for updated family portraits.

After we finished the family photos outside, we moved into the studio for Riley’s individual milestone portraits.


At almost four months old, he was full of curiosity and sweet expressions, which made capturing those classic baby milestone images so much fun. Of course he couldn't be upstaged by his brothers, so he showed off his standing too. Those boys can't be held down!


Milestone sessions are one of my favorite ways for families to document how quickly babies change in their first year. From those early tummy time days to sitting, crawling, and eventually celebrating a first birthday, each stage brings something new to capture.

I can’t wait to see how much Riley grows before his next milestone session!
